Inside the Role of a Natural Area Specialist

What is a Natural Area Specialist?

A Natural Area Specialist is a professional who works to restore, manage and protect natural ecosystems. These ecosystems span diverse environments, including bushland, wetlands, riparian corridors, coastal regions and saltmarshes. Natural area specialists are at the forefront of ecological restoration projects. Their work focuses on restoring ecosystem health, enhancing local biodiversity, and mitigating environmental risks – caring for and restoring our natural spaces.

Natural area specialist or bush regenerator?

A Natural Area Specialist is often referred to as a Bush Regenerator. This is because their goal of improving biodiversity, stabilising landscapes, and supporting the health of native environments often involves facilitating the natural regeneration of native plants. Therefore, bush regeneration can be seen as the primary part of their role.

What do natural area specialists do at Dragonfly Environmental?

Natural area specialists carry out a wide range of hands-on environmental management tasks on Dragonfly Environmental projects. These services include but are not limited to:

  • Bush regeneration and weed control: This involves restoring natural areas by identifying invasive species, removing weeds, and managing threats.
  • Ecological restoration: This involves restoring and recreating degraded or lost ecosystems, including design, on-ground works such as planting native vegetation and collecting seeds, and maintenance.
  • Monitoring and reporting: This involves preparing high-quality environmental reports grounded in environmental science, in accordance with state and local regulations.

Why are natural area specialists important?

Natural area specialists play a critical role in addressing environmental challenges such as habitat loss, invasive species, and land degradation. Their work doesn’t just improve landscapes and aesthetics. The work these specialists do helps protect biodiversity, supports communities, and ensures that natural environments can be enjoyed by future generations.
