Project Outcomes:

Towra Point Nature Reserve is located on the Kurnell Peninsula and forms part of the southern shore ofBotany Bay. This Nature Reserve encompasses important vegetation communities, including Swamp Oak Floodplain Forest, Kurnell Dune Forest, Littoral Rainforestand Coastal Saltmarsh. Three of the six sites (Sites1, 2 & 3) contain the endangered (NSW)Syzygium paniculatum-Magenta Lilly Pilly.

Works were aimed at promoting the wellbeing of and assisting the repopulation of the endangered Syzygium paniculatum through all sites, as well as the Endangered Ecological Communities of the Nature Reserve. This was achieved through the targeted control of invasive weeds such as Ground Asparagus, Lantana, African Olives and Bitou Bush through the various methods discussed in this report. Worked areas have seen significant improvement with the overall reduction in weed densities and regeneration of native species. Spot spraying was also carried out under very sensitive conditions and completed successfully by our well-trained, experienced team.

In the sand dune area, we conducted targeted weeding and installed 2,000 native saltmarsh plants following the treatment of Juncus acutus.

Project Outcomes:

As part of Hornsby Shire Council’s long-term vision for conservation, our team has been actively working in the bushland since 2020. We manage six designated zones, where we are successfully controlling weed species and supporting the natural regeneration of the area.

Over the past four years, we have carried out post-burn weed control, track maintenance, and planting within the contracted zones—and our efforts are ongoing as we continue to support the ecological health of the area.

Project Outcomes:

Our team delivered Stage 2 bush regeneration works at Dee Why Dunes between January and June 2024 under Northern Beaches Council Bush Regeneration contract 2023. This project, covering approximately 11.32 ha across three zones, built on the foundations of the Year 1 grant and complemented ongoing operational regeneration efforts. Our focus was on controlling invasive species and restoring the native dune ecosystem through a combination of innovative and targeted techniques.

A major achievement was the effective management of Ipomoea cairica using a shredding technique within Ficinia nodosa, which allowed access to mature vine bases with minimal herbicide use. This method has proven successful and will inform future control strategies. Our team also conducted extensive preparation and planting in key areas, including the zone north of the overflow carpark and the bay near the toilet block. Invasive species like Pennisetum clandestinum and Asparagus aethiopicus were treated using hand removal, shredding, and spot-spraying.

New plantings of native species, including Banksia integrifolia and native ground covers, have supported erosion control and improved biodiversity. Weed density ratings improved noticeably—from ‘fair’ to ‘good’ in the southern dune zone, and from ‘poor’ to ‘fair’ along the lagoon edge. These results highlight the effectiveness of our targeted approach. Moving forward, continued management of Ipomoea cairica, regular site maintenance, and strategic planting will be essential to further enhance the ecological resilience of Dee Why Dunes.

Project Outcomes:

Our team implemented a range of bush regeneration and hazard reduction techniques tailored to the specific needs of the Forestville/Killarney HR sites throughout the 2023–2024 contract period. These techniques included, but were not limited to, brush-cutting, vine skirting, hand-weeding, spot-spraying, manual fuel removal, and chainsaw work on woody weeds where required. We applied appropriate ecological practices to manage both native and exotic vegetation, with the aim of minimising fuel loads and enhancing overall site condition. Across all designated Asset Protection Zones (APZs)—with the exception of some steep slope areas—we carried out effective fire risk mitigation works, particularly focusing on separation zones adjoining bushland, such as those within Tipperary and Londonderry Reserves. Our team tailored treatment methods, including cut/scrape and paint, de-seeding, and selective pruning, to the site conditions and target species. As a result, we successfully reduced bushfire risk to surrounding properties, decreased overall weed densities, and supported natural regeneration wherever feasible.

Our team has achieved a sustained reduction in fuel loads across multiple sites, significantly decreasing bushfire risk and improving access for firefighting efforts. We have created and maintained Asset Protection Zones (APZs) to protect nearby assets and support long-term site resilience. Through targeted weed control and ongoing maintenance, we’ve encouraged the natural expansion of priority native species. Additionally, our team has carried out selective under-pruning of native vegetation to establish vertical separation from the canopy layer, further enhancing fire safety and promoting healthy bushland structure.

Project Outcomes:

In 2024, Dragonfly Environmental conducted extensive bush regeneration works at the NSW Golf Club, located within the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, which contains approximately 16 hectares of the critically endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub (ESBS) in 21 distinct fragments. The project, fully funded by the NSW Golf Club, involved regular site visits once to twice a week throughout the year. The focus of the works was on primary, secondary, maintenance, pre-burn, and post-burn activities across the site, with particular emphasis on high-visibility areas such as fairways and zones adjacent to tee boxes and greens, in order to maintain and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the club.

Efforts were concentrated on managing and reducing difficult-to-control ‘coloniser’ species, including Turkey rhubarb (Rumex sagittatus), Pampas lily of the valley (Salpichroa origanifolia), Lantana camara, Bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. rotundata), Ludwigia peruviana, African love grass (Eragrostis curvula), and Giant paspalum (Paspalum urvillei). Regular maintenance and follow-up works targeted herbaceous and woody weeds, exotic grasses, vines, and groundcovers, while periodic primary works addressed woody weed incursions in less prominent bushland areas.

Additionally, Dragonfly Environmental carried out comprehensive primary burn preparation and post-burn maintenance activities in one of the zones, supporting ongoing restoration efforts. The team’s work throughout 2024 played a key role in the continued preservation and enhancement of the Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, contributing to the health and resilience of this critically endangered ecological community.
