Project Outcomes:

The Elizabeth MacArthur EM3 planting site has successfully established approximately 14,000m² of native vegetation, primarily canopy species, providing valuable habitat and a movement corridor for native fauna.

Our team has carried out effective weed management as part of our bush regeneration work and implemented planting efforts to enhance native vegetation. The site now includes around 1,000 canopy trees, 400 shrubs, and 300 ground covers, with initial plantings undertaken in 2022 and ongoing additions in 2023 and 2024.

Future plantings will focus on increasing shrub and ground cover diversity to further enhance habitat quality and support a broader range of native wildlife.

Project Outcomes:

The 1.84 ha Cooks River/Castlereagh Ironbark Forest project was successfully completed, improving site conditions while protecting biodiversity. Invasive vines and weeds were removed to reduce competition with native vegetation, and all weed material was collected and disposed of sustainably. Resilient areas were identified to support native plant recruitment, while coordination with the council ensured strategic plantings were implemented. Drainage channel banks were stabilised using jute matting and coir logs, and frog habitat was protected by avoiding herbicides and maintaining ponds. Erosion control measures were conducted, preparing the site for long-term resilience. Ongoing monitoring, collaboration, and community engagement are recommended to sustain these improvements. This project has enhanced bushland health and ensured long-term ecological sustainability.

Project Outcomes:

Our team has successfully improved all zones throughout the 2022-23 contract period, meeting key objectives such as reducing weed densities—particularly woody, vine, and herbaceous weeds—while encouraging native regeneration. We have enhanced the health of planted vegetation, increased species diversity, and improved habitat through revegetation and mulching.  Most weeds are now under control, with only Hydrocotyle bonariensis present in significant numbers. Buffer planting areas have seen a major reduction in weeds, though ongoing monitoring is required in southern sections. We have also prepared the Stage 2 and Stage 3 areas for future terracing, mulching, and planting, pending the removal of remaining Erythrina sykesii trees. Our continued efforts will ensure long-term ecological improvements across the reserve.

Project Outcomes:

Our team successfully achieved the main objectives of Stage 1 of the contract period in 2023 by undertaking primary weed clearing within areas containing Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, an Endangered Ecological Community (EEC). Using manual, mechanical, and chemical methods, we targeted dense woody weed thickets, vine weeds such as Asparagus aethiopicus and Rumex sagittatus, and herbaceous and grass weeds to support native vegetation regeneration.

In Stage 2 of the project in 2024, we conducted Secondary Weeding, spot-spraying, and Maintenance Weeding in Zones 1 and 2, effectively reducing weed cover to less than 10% across most of the site while monitoring native species regeneration. Additional weeding in new work zones, Var.1 and Var.2, further improved site condition by controlling woody, vine, herbaceous, and grass weeds. Our efforts enhanced the ecological integrity of this EEC, supporting the recovery of species such as Acacia sophorae, Solanum aviculare, and Stephania japonica. Continued Maintenance Weeding and spot-spraying are recommended to sustain these improvements and promote long-term native vegetation recovery.

Project Outcomes:

Our team successfully improved all Georges River Hazard Reduction APZs and SFAZs throughout the 2023-24 contract period, meeting the objectives of reducing fire risk to neighbouring properties, lowering overall weed densities, and encouraging natural regeneration where possible. Hazard reduction activities and weed control works were carried out across much of the project areas, excluding the most dense weed thickets and the most resilient areas with minimal weeds or woody debris. We employed a range of treatment methods, including chain-sawing, brush cutting, skirting, hand-weeding, de-seeding, spot spraying, and cut/scrape and paint techniques, tailored to the species and locations, all with the aim of reducing bushfire risk.

Project Outcomes:

The 2021-22 bush regeneration project focused on reducing weed densities and encouraging native regeneration across multiple zones including areas containing remnants of the Sydney Turpentine Ironbark Forest (EEC). Maintenance included spot-spraying, hand-weeding, and the creation of habitat piles for fauna. We targeted key weeds like Ehrharta erecta and Bidens pilosa, particularly in areas with dense shrub growth and lawn interfaces. Flora surveys indicated reduced weed presence, with some notable results including the discovery of a small patch of orchids. Overall, the project improved native vegetation and reduced weed dominance, enhancing the site’s ecological health.
