Yana Badu Wetland
| Clients: | Sydney Water |
| Location: | Yana Badu Wetlands, Chullora |
| Project Duaration: | 2020 – present |
Method & Technic:
- Aquatic Weed Treatment
- Broadscale Herbicide Spraying
- Bush Regeneration
- Revegetation
Project Outcomes:
The wetlands were constructed in the late 1990s by Landcom as part of the stormwater drainage system upgrade. During this process, the upper reaches of the Cooks River were replaced with concrete pipes, culverts, and a concrete channel. In response, the South West Enviro Centre campaigned for a solution to improve the quality of stormwater runoff entering the Cooks River, leading to the creation of a treatment wetland. The wetland and flood detention basin were built on land previously owned by the NSW State Rail Authority, with Sydney Water becoming the custodian and manager in January 2004.
Since 2018, our team has been actively engaged in bush regeneration and comprehensive weed management across the entire site.
David’s team has been actively engaged in ecological restoration efforts at the site since 2020, focusing on planting and revegetation to enhance habitat quality. We conduct regular monitoring and protection of local fauna, including freshwater turtles, ensuring their conservation within the wetland ecosystem. Targeted weed management is a key priority, with the removal of aquatic weeds such as Alternanthera philoxeroides and the spray-free hand removal of Ludwigia peruviana to safeguard the habitat of four frog species found onsite. Additionally, we collaborate with Canterbury City Council to host guided “walk and talk” sessions, providing an opportunity to showcase the site and educate the community on local biodiversity and conservation efforts.

Method & Technic:

Project Outcomes:
Dragonfly Environmental has been working at Smalls Creek since 2019 under the supervision of multiple team leaders. This contract covers a large area of Smalls Creek, extending through Kellyville, Rouse Hill, and Beaumont Hills. David’s team has successfully completed weed management and revegetation efforts at Smalls Creek, which included the removal of exotic aquatic weeds, revegetation by planting, maintenance, and fine hand weeding. Flood mitigation is also a key aspect of the project, with regular removal of flood debris and vegetation over plantings. The site is currently in the maintenance phase, where our team has continued managing weeds around the planting areas and creek sides. Through fine hand weeding and brush cutting, we’ve effectively treated weeds, supporting the ongoing site regeneration. We are pleased to have secured a renewed contract, and the project continues to make strong progress as we restore the site through targeted weed management and native vegetation regeneration.

| Location: | First Avenue and Balmoral Ave, Belfield |
| Project Duaration: | 2019 -2024 |
Method & Technic:
- Aquatic Weed Treatment
- Bush Regeneration
- Revegetation
Project Outcomes:
The Cooks River is a vital waterway within the Botany Bay catchment, providing significant open space, estuarine habitat, and biodiversity within a dense and well-established urban environment. Sydney Water owns and manages approximately 11 km of riverbank and several tributaries, while various local councils and state agencies oversee an additional 16 km.
The site features a mix of Cooks River/Castlereagh Ironbark Forest (CIF) and saltmarsh, planted as part of a naturalisation project led by Sydney Water in collaboration with government agencies.
The Cooks River site is divided into three sections, each managed by David. Our team successfully maintained the site, ensuring the health and resilience of the restored ecosystems.

North Richmond Primary and Rehabilitation work
| Clients: | Sydney Water |
| Location: | North Richmond |
| Project Duaration: | 2024 – Present |
Method & Technic:
- Rehabilitation
- Bush Regeneration
- Revegetation
Project Outcomes:
The ongoing work at the Sydney Water PEMP site in Richmond WWTP and North Richmond involves primary removal of exotic vegetation on highly degraded areas, including PCT 849 (Cumberland Plain Woodland CEEC) and PCT 835 (River Flat Eucalypt Forest EEC). Our team has conducted native flora surveys to increase the known species list of the site, and native fauna and pest animal monitoring has been carried out using fauna cams. Additionally, we have focused on the maintenance and primary removal of exotic vegetation in these ecological communities. A key achievement has been the locating, tagging, mapping, and ongoing maintenance of Grevillea juniperina (Vulnerable BC Act), significantly increasing the size of the known population onsite. The project continues to progress with a focus on restoration and preservation of the native environment.
